What is Hope Centre Burundi?

This is a project to build six houses for orphans in Gatumba, close to Bujumbura in Burundi. Each house will be home to eight children and one ‘mama’ responsible for looking after the family unit.

The children have been orphaned as a result of ethnic violence and diseases such as Aids. Some of the children are also HIV positive themselves. They are currently looked after by a Burundian Pastor who takes great care of them in spite of their poor and cramped living conditions.

Hugh Henderson of Mission International met Pastor Leonard for the first time in 2006 and, moved by the conditions in which he and the children were living, made a promise to raise funds to build better homes for them.

Charles and Val Carr have committed themselves to overseeing the building of the children’s houses in Burundi and work started on site in July 2008. They are voluntary workers for the charity so all funds raised for the project go directly to the building of the houses.

The purpose of this site is to raise awareness and generate funds for the project. Please let us know if you think you can help with fundraising or with further ideas for fundraising ventures.

Where are We Now & Where are We Going.

As of December (Christmas) 2009 we have managed to house most of the orphans into the first 3 houses. The forth is almost complete. However, we still want to see houses 5 & 6 completed. The foundations and services are already in for 5 & 6.

The next phase of this project is the community related work. There is a real need for a vocational school where the community can learn important skills to allow them to earn a living. There is also a real need for a community clinic so we will begin to draw up plans for this and encourage as many of you as we can to get on board and contribute to this project in what ever way that you can.

This website is updated regularly so please check back as often as you can and spread the word.

The menu to the left has the project listed from week one with links for each week. There are hundreds of images to view and a story for each week. You should also check out the videos to the right. We even have the President of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza, visit Hope Centre along with the TV cameras.

The problem that we have here in the west (and I'm as guilty as anyone else) is the "out of sight, out of mind" mentality. Whether we see the needs and problems or not they still exist and it's you and I who have the responsibility to help address them. If you are interested in helping in some way then here are a few ways to help.
