* About Burundi
About Burundi
Burundi is one of the world's poorest nations and is now rebuilding following civil war since 1972.
Burundi-outline-small
Burundi has an estimated population of around 8 million, approximately half of whom are aged 14 or less. The effects of AIDS and cival war has had a significant effect on the demographics of the country.

There is now peace since elections in 2005, but the country still faces the formidable challenges of reviving a shattered economy and of forging national unity with up to 500,000 refugees now returning from camps in Tanzania and Kenya.

I started writing my testimony around about Apr 2007 and then finished it off with the "What Next" section. You can read the full article here. Be warned, it's very long:

http://www.eulogia.co.uk/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1177199047/0#0

Reading what I wrote last surprised me a little as almost all of what I wrote has, or is happening right now. I'm writing this in January 2008.

For some time I had been feeling a little uncomfortable in my job role with Stewart Milne. I think basically I needed a change. Variety has always been important part of my life. Doing the same job every day is not challenging enough. So, even though I had a good paying job working only three days a week, in November 2007 I decided to go self employed. Looking back I still don't know if this was the right decision to make at that time or not but I had to do something. We had also decided that we would look for some land in the country and build a new house for our selves. We did take a look around but didn't find what we were looking for. What happened next was instigated by my wife Valerie.

whilst at one of her bible studies she felt challenged by the lord and came back to share her thoughts. She felt that instead of us building for our selves that we should offer our services to an oversees mission or similar and that this would possibly require us to sell our house and move. The thinking being that we would be self financing for a year. We contacted 'Habitat for Humanity' who showed an interest but didn't know how and where to fit us into their system so that hasn't really come to anything yet. However we have a good friend who used to work for Signpost International and now runs his own 'Mission International'. We contacted him and he spoke to some of his contacts in Africa who were delighted to hear of our offer. To cut a long story short what we are now planning to is for Val and I to go out with Mission International to Burundi for a couple of weeks at the end of March 2008 on a reconnaissance mission to see what we will need to take with us and where we should live and where the boys should go to school.

The project that we will possibly be involved in is for a pastor over there that has acquired about 35 orphaned children. Some as a result of the 1994 genocide and aids. They are living in very poor conditions so Mission International are looking to building them an Orphanage. They have the land and money that has been donated for the project but no one to build it. This is certainly something that I would love to be involved in.

We may actually be able to take a containers over there with us. This is what we have to figure out when we go on the initial visit. When we return we will be looking to sell the house and possibly move out in June/July 2008. So it's an exciting and very scary time but feel that God is very much in this.

In the mean time I am going to be working for a Local Timber Frame company (Deeside TimberFrame) who have given me a flexible working arrangement.

If you would like to ask questions or offer help in any way to what we are doing then please contact us here. We would love to hear from you. We will start adding pictures and links etc to this section as they become available.
